    Facts about Mosquitoes

    Facts about Mosquitoes

Female mosquitoes bite you because they need the iron and protein from blood in order to reproduce. They pierce your skin using sucking parts of their mouth called a proboscis. While males have a proboscis, they don’t feed on blood. Instead, they suck plant juices.

There are almost 200 species of mosquitoes in the United States. Different mosquito species have specific habitats and behaviors. However, one thing they all have in common is their life cycles stages. They go from egg to larva to pupa to adult. Mosquitoes have a short lifespan that ranges from about ten days to about two months.

Mosquitoes tend to be attracted to darker colors, so some people recommend that you wear lighter colors to keep mosquitoes away. Keep in mind, though, that the presence of sweat and heat will draw mosquitoes to you, regardless of what colors you’re wearing. You can wear long pants and a long-sleeved shirt to protect your skin from mosquito bites. However, mosquitoes can bite through thin fabrics.
